Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS)

Sonographers use ultrasound technology to create images of the body's internal organs and structures. Doctors use this information to diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions.

To prepare you with the skills and knowledge required to thrive as a sonographer, we designed our program to strengthen your education with hands-on training. We are accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

At Beckfield College, you will learn the skills you need to be a successful sonographer. Our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is a highly specialized, comprehensive training course for ultrasound that includes an in-depth analysis of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pathophysiology and the application of ultrasound to prepare graduates to accurately and efficiently aid physicians in the diagnosis of disease. Our curriculum provides integrated analysis and hands-on training, which includes:

  • Study applied biological sciences, applications of ultrasound, related diagnostic procedures, and image evaluation.
  • Prepares students to use ultrasound machines and specialized equipment to perform diagnostic exams.
  • Learn patient care techniques, professional development, and allied health ethics.

You will gain hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art sonography labs. Our labs have ultrasound equipment comparable to what you will use in your clinical rotations. These courses and clinical rotations will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to be a successful DMS.

After graduating from our program, you will be eligible to sit for American Registry of Radiologic Technologist’s (ARRT) sonography exam after demonstration of the required competencies.

ARRT certification is also a recognized prerequisite for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) examination to qualify to sit for the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification. For detailed prerequisite information students should refer to ARDMS.org. With your associate degree and registry certification, you will be qualified to work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers by doing the following:

  • Prepare patients for procedures by taking their medical history and answering any questions about the procedure
  • Prepare and maintain diagnostic imaging equipment
  • Operate equipment to obtain diagnostic images or to conduct tests
  • Review images or test results to check for quality and adequate coverage of the areas needed for diagnoses
  • Recognize the difference between normal and abnormal images, and identify other diagnostic information
  • Analyze diagnostic information to provide a summary of findings for physicians
  • Record findings and keep track of patients’ records

The Diploma in Practical Nursing program, the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program, and the 3-year Prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing track are approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.   • Be a U. S. citizen, an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States, or a foreign national eligible for a student visa.
